American with Disabilities Act Done Right: 2/14/19
Richard Acree
Look at the photo below. This is the disabled ADA parking at a Walmart in Nashville, TN. Shown in the first photo is the van accessible parking space installed parallel to the vehicular path of travel on the left. Beyond the vehicle is the sign that says “Van Accessible”. Further out is the entry/exit door to the store.
Notice all the blue and yellow striping to identify the space, as well as the ISA symbol and the word “VAN” painted on the parking space. I know, the car is not a “van”. And that is OK, because van accessible space cannot exclude vehicles that are not vans.
Anyway, back to the story, to the right of the van accessible space are the other ADA spaces parked perpendicular to the direction of the vehicular path. The photo below is looking at those spaces.
All that in the photo above is great. And between those spaces and the van accessible space is a shared path/route that leads toward the store and across a marked route in the background.
So in the photo above the route to the store goes along side of the van accessible space and in front of the other ADA spaces on the right. This is a great example of ADA done right! This store may be a great candidate for the Certificate of Excellence program offered by ADAIN.
